What the crossing is and where it sits

The Kamakurakokomae crossing is the spot where a road crosses the Enoden line a few steps from Kamakura-koko-mae Station, with the sea just beyond. People looking for the Slam Dunk Kamakura location search for it under several names, and they all lead to the same small corner of the Shonan coast. It looks calm in photographs, but it is an ordinary level crossing in an ordinary neighborhood, where people live and drive every day.

The station sits at 1-25-5 Koshigoe in Kamakura City and carries the station number EN08 on the Enoden line.1 The tourist association describes the Enoshima Electric Railway as a line well known overseas, where cars run on Route 134 alongside the train and surfers share the seascape.7 On a clear day, the view from the train window can include Mt. Fuji over Cape Koyurugi.8

That mix of tracks, road, sea and mountain is what draws the crowds, and it also explains the rules in the later sections. You are visiting a place that was never built as an attraction, and the people who live here did not choose to host a crowd. Treat the crossing as part of a commuter line, and keep the line, the road and the residents ahead of your camera.

Getting there by Enoden

Take the Enoden to Kamakura-koko-mae Station from Kamakura or Enoshima. From this station, adult fares to the other stops on the line run from 200 to 260 yen, and the trips take between 2 and 18 minutes.2 That makes the crossing an easy add-on to a day that already includes Enoshima or the Great Buddha at Hase. Adults are 12 and over on the Enoden, while children aged 6 to 12 and enrolled in elementary school pay the child fare.14

Because it is an unmanned station, you pay with an IC card at the simple ticket gate. At all stations except Fujisawa, Enoshima, Hase and Kamakura, you touch the card on the gate panel when you board and again when you get off.9 Nationwide cards such as Suica and PASMO work. Enoden also sells paper tickets from machines, with the fare table above the machine and an English switch on the screen.15

If you plan several rides, compare the day passes. The Enoden Noriorikun costs 800 yen for an adult and 400 yen for a child, and it allows unlimited rides on the whole line on the date of issue.3,16 The Kamakura Free Environment ticket costs 900 yen for an adult and is sold at Enoden Kamakura and Hase stations.17 The Noriorikun cannot be used with a Japan Rail Pass.16

What the station offers and what it lacks

Kamakura-koko-mae is a small platform, not a visitor center. It is one of the unmanned stations on the Enoden, along with Ishigami, Yanagikoji, Shonan-Kaigan-Koen, Yuigahama and Wadazuka.4 Enoden states that there are no restroom facilities at the station and asks passengers to use one elsewhere before arriving.5

One caution: the same company's FAQ page lists Kamakurakokomae among the stations that have restrooms, so the sources disagree. Plan as if there are none, and use the facilities at a larger station instead. The FAQ does list restrooms at Koshigoe and Shichirigahama stations, which lie on either side.13

Staff matter if you need help. At Shichirigahama Station staff are on hand only during the daytime, from 9:00 to 18:00, and the station is unmanned in the evening.18 At Kamakura-koko-mae itself there is no attendant at any time, so buy a pass or load your IC card before you leave a larger station.

The rules that apply at the crossing

The most important rule comes from Enoden itself: do not enter the track area, because of the danger of being hit by a train.6 Do not walk on the tracks, do not litter, do not use camera flash and wait behind the yellow line, the railway adds in a separate request.80 A photograph is never worth stepping over a line, and that goes for every Kamakura train crossing, not only this one.

The tourist association's visitor guidelines add the street rules. Take care not to disturb local residents and do not obstruct vehicles.11 Do not take photos in dangerous locations, and follow the rules and manners when taking pictures.81 Be mindful of traffic and other pedestrians, especially in crowded areas, and take your trash with you.82 Standing in a roadway for a shot fails every one of these tests.

On the platform, Enoden asks visitors not to step beyond the yellow line or use flashes, and to avoid inconveniencing other users or local residents when taking photos.10 In practice that means keeping tripods off the road, not blocking the pavement, and leaving space for the people who live here. If a spot is busy, wait your turn or move on. Hold your phone at arm's length from the curb rather than stepping out to get a better angle, and keep children and bags well back from the line.

Crowds, timing and the coast around it

The association says the coastal sightseeing spots of Yuigahama, Shichirigahama and Inamuragasaki attract large numbers of tourists, and Kamakura City recommends early-morning sightseeing to spread visitors across the day.12 The same association runs a live crowd map for Kamakura's sights, where the color of each icon shows the latest congestion, which is worth a look before you set out.83

The sea itself calls for care. The association notes that the coast is at particular risk of tsunami: after a strong or long earthquake, move to high ground away from the coast and do not return until the warning is cancelled.84 Kamakura lies by the sea and is vulnerable to high waves and tides in typhoons, and the association suggests refraining from sightseeing when a typhoon is expected.85

Combine the crossing with a short walk along the shore, then a ride on to Enoshima or Hase, where Hasedera Temple is a 5-minute walk from the station and Kotoku-in a 7-minute walk.28 A Noriorikun holder gets discounts at Enoshima Sea Candle, Enoshima Aquarium and Hasedera Temple on the pass date, which makes the pass useful on a day with several stops.86

Guided options that include the station

A guide can make this stop calmer, because a local knows where to stand. A private 1.5-hour Enoden train ride with a guide that visits a Slam Dunk spot is listed from $92 per group, with free cancellation. A longer private anime tour lasts 3.5 hours and is listed from $83. Both are new listings with few or no reviews, so read the page before you book.

If you want a full day, one listing combines Kotoku-in, Hase, Kamakurakokomae Station, Enoshima and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in a 10-hour day with an English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean guide, from $56. Treat the stop as a listed point on a route, not as time you can spend at will, and ask the operator how long the group stays at each place before you book.

The Kamakura & Enoshima day trip on this site does not list the crossing among its stops, which are Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Komachi Street, Hase-dera, Kotoku-in and Enoshima. If the crossing is your main goal, travel on your own by Enoden or choose a listing that names the station.
